I want to get a DVD burner for my computer which is a 650 Athlon with 384MB of ram. Will the slow speed of my computer effect the qaulity of the movies burnt(of course, movies I already own)? I don't care how long it takes to burn the movie, just the qaulity of it.

Thanks,

A slow machine could affect burn quality if the drive hits buffer underflows constantly. This happens when the computer cannot send data to the drive fast enough. Other than that, raw machine power doesn't matter much.

You can tune up your system in order to minimize the possibility of buffer underflow:
  • Connect the drive to a different IDE channel than your main HDD.
  • If possible, dedicate an entire IDE channel to the drive (a single drive configuration).
  • Make sure the drive operates in DMA mode.
  • Defragment your main HDD before you start burning seriously.
  • Use a burning software that can set itself to high priority.
  • Use slower burning speeds if the maximum possible speed causes buffer underflows.
With that in mind, I think that a 650 MHz machine should be good enough for DVD burning.

I burnt DVD's very carefully on a PII350, so if you follow niktheblak's advice, you should be fine.
