Full Version: Slow Musepack encoding on Mac OS X
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossy Audio Compression > MPC

I am disappointed with the encoding speed I get with the Musepack encoder for Mac OS X.
When I encode using the latest mppenc (1.15u) --standard I only get ~2.6x speed.
Seen people talking about 10-12x speeds on Windows computers, so there is obviously something missing here.

I am unsure if the encoder use Altivec optimization, or if there are ways to make it run faster? (I know how to optimize using "./configure > make", but not through Xcode as Musepack use).
Any hints are highly welcome! biggrin.gif

By the way, I am running Mac OS 10.3.8 on a PowerBook G4 1.5GHz with 1GB ram.

I've started working on optimizing the encoder for PPC and on the same configuration as yours I now get ~10x. I will be releasing a patch once I've done a little more work.. hopefully getting the speed closer to ~15x

Sounds great!
At last there is somebody caring about us PowerPC users... smile.gif

I`m anxiously waiting for your patch to land.

You've probably figured this out by now, but for anyone else using the Xcode project to build (instead of doing it manually)- don't forget to change the build style from 'development' to 'deployment'. Development turns all optimizations off, and it seems like this was the case for you since --standard reaches ~5.8x on a 1.33GHz G4.

Something doesn't sound right about the krmathis' encoding speeds, esp. considering that his CPU is twice as fast as mine. I used to hit something like 3.5x on my powerbook (867/640MB) when encoding to MPC.
