Hi there.

I buy music online frequently and in the past have used Winamp and Windows Media Player to organize my music. I have gotten sick of them and have started using Foobar 2000.

Anyway, I have many protected WMA files (licences included) that Foobar refuses to play. They work fine on Winamp and WMP. Here is the error it is giving me:

INFO (CORE) : opening file for playback :
INFO (CORE) : location: "file://C:\My Music\Genesis - Calling All Stations\Genesis - 9 - Small Talk.wma" (0)
WARNING (foo_wma) : DRM protected file is unsupported - You need a license to perform the requested operation on this media file.

ERROR (CORE) : error opening file for playback :

How do i fix this?

You can't. Not legally, anyhow.

So you're saying they didn't purchase that music.

I do believe that under Fair Use should be able to play it wherever. However, the law as it stands now also demands that copy protection remain in place when present, and justifying one's actions with Fair Use would be a tough sell to the judge. Not the way it oughta be, but the way it is.

Thanks to the DMCA it is irrelevant if you "should" be able to play them, because developing code to play protected files may be illegal.

In other words: you may play them on other devices. But from a legal point of view its difficult for developers to create the applications which allow you to do that.

Or in other words: you may copy it for personal use - but you may not break the copy-protection :-)

The case of foobar may be special, because if i remember right it uses the microsoft WMA libraries to play them (so, foo_wma is a bit like a bridge between the MS WMA dlls and foobar) - so, maybe there is a way to play them via fb2k - but i'm not knowledgeable enough in that department to know if thats the case and how.

Welcome to the DMCA and DRM.
