Full Version: Players with direct file system access to music

Is there a list somewhere that includes whether players have direct access to the file system as an external drive, and if this access includes the ability to work with the music files directly?

I'd far prefer to rsync my music to a device than use proprietrary synchronisation solutions, thus allowing a true backup of my music collection and associated files.

Basically I'm interested in audio focused devices (not a fan of multifunction) that will not alter the files at all, a pure backup so I can retain additional data files resident in the album folders.

Cannot say anything about other players, but the iRiver H120 and H140 use the USB mass storage interface. so you just plug it in to your PC and off you go with an external hard disk (USB 1.1 or 2.0).
I've used mine with Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris, as well as Windows XP. Real plug'n play for the most.
If you want to use rsync, let me know. I just finished cooking up a small set of scripts that you could find useful.
I'll post info on these in the forum tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah, as far as I can see the H140 and M3 are the best bets for using a DAP in a filename-centric manner rather than via a database. Here in NZ I can pick up an M3 from fairly close by (Australia - expensive if bought in NZ itself) but the H140 is hard to come by. I don't really like the direction the H340 has gone as the extra features add a premium to the price but it is more readily available. Just wondering if there's any other sleepers out there.

iAudio M3 series are also standard USB devices (USB 2.0). And yes, I do work with my files directly off of it. My M3L plays my Ogg Vorbis files wonderfully for ~30hrs on one charge! Haha, beat that, iRiver!

*The 5-second flamewar*

I was thinking of getting an iAudio M3 rather than my H120 several months ago. But then, as nice as a remote is, I use the main display for 2/3rds of the time anyway. So iRiver it was then. I just could not face the iAudio's lack of a large LCD display. And I grudgingly admit that you get more battery of of yours, yes tongue.gif

Could you guys tell me how many characters are displayed on 1. the H140's screen, and 2. on the M3 remote? The pictures I've seen don't look too different in the horizontal dimension. I've used the H120 before but some time ago so can't really recall, and I've never seen the M3 in the flesh.

Think it's 21x8 chars on the H140?
