while foobar2000 has become my default music player, i really do miss what i found to be a very elegant and logical navigational metaphor in itunes.

has anyone every created a panel for the Columns UI environment that simulates the behavior of the GENRE - ARTIST - ALBUM windows that itunes uses to navigate through the library?

You could use a custom view in albumlist that would consist of the same style of heirarchy. Roughly:
