Full Version: Nero changes file extensions

Hello.

I have begun to rip my CD collection to FLAC and then burn to DVD, while I wait to buy a hard disk.

I hev noticed, however, a strange bug in Nero. Some songs have long names, and Nero asks me if it can change them. I clicked yes at least a couple of times and noticed later on that it changed the extension of the problematic files to .flc, making them unvalid for some programs.

My question is: is there a way I can scan all my DVDs to see if more tracks suffered this fate? (at least two of them did). Does Nero do another "funny" things to these files, besides changing file extension? How can I change it back to .flac?

And last, but not least, is there an alternative program that will allow me to burn my long-name songs without this annoyance? And please don't say burnatonce, I have waited ages for my ProDVD code!

Thank you. smile.gif

It's probably related to limitations of the iso-9660 CD-ROM format and/or its extensions.

You could use a lossless compression format that doesn't use 4 letter extensions. Say, maybe one that used 3 letters, or even 2... wink.gif

I shall edit my lossless comparision table with "file name extension size". 4 letters will get "bad", 3 letters will get "average" and 2 letters will get "good".

The ProDVD key is no longer required.

Too bad ProDVD does not support USB external drives or DVD+R.

Well, I will be more careful with Nero from now on...

Another question: is there a way I can search on my backup DVDs for NON .flac files?
You know, to see if there are more "damaged" tracks. I have tried WinXP search, but it does not seem to do the trick.

Please help.

Start -> Run, type "cmd", then "d:" (or whatever your DVD drive is), then "dir /s *.flc" ?

Thanks CiTay.

I never learnt that much of the command prompt back in the day.

Good you helped me.

If you're just looking for a list, you can use the /b option to avoid all the directory and size summaries.

Thanks too.

Also, I guess this is a docummented bug. So, is changing the file extension the only "damage" Nero does to these files? or does it do something else?

I am very paranoid!

No, it only renames.

All right then,

Case closed wink.gif

The case isn't closed for me. I'm trying to do something similar to the original poster and I am surprised to not find better more discussion/resolution of this problem. Via ripped CD's from EAC and Foobar2000, I have about 20 GB of Flac files and 7 GB of transcoded ogg files sitting on my hard drive and I would like to back them up onto DVD, not for playing but for off-line storage (eventually I'll have much more). I have a DVD+R burner and the Nero Express software I've tried wants to truncate my filenames. Isn't there some software that will work with a DVD+R burner that will preserve the directory/file name structure? I'm happy to upgrade to the full version of Nero or another package, but not if it doesn't sovlve my problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't mind going away from ISO you can burn as UDF in Nero. Hasn't caused any problems for me yet.

You could write the DVD in UDF format which should not suffer from the iso restrictions. If you use UDF 1.02 you ensure maximum compatibility.

EDIT: Ooops, evereux was faster wink.gif

Thanks! sTisTi and evereux,
I just downloaded burnatonce and recorded my files using UDF and it worked like a charm!

I should add that I had to also download ProDVD and with burnatonce it could burn to a DVD+R with no problems.
