Full Version: Best OGG quality setting for flash player?

Greetings,
Could anyone recommend the best OGG compression quality setting for use on a portable flash player with Very limited memory capacity. I am currently using WMA9-Q50 (approx. 80kbps vbr) and I can't tell the difference between it and the uncompressed source CD (I must be deaf). I assume a similar OGG size/quality setting would be "-q 1.00", but can it compete with or out-perform the WMA9-Q50 setting?
Thank you,

That depends on how perceptable ogg's artifacts are to you. The metallic ringing introduced by WMA bothers me at least up to 96 kbps (probably higher, haven't tested in a while). On the other hand, ogg @ q1 (correct, ~80 kbps) sounds excellent on my Cowon I5 and the artifacts are almost indiscernible to me. You might even be able to get by at q0, depending on how perceptive you are to ogg or to artifacts in general.

Ogg is definetly better than wma.

Wma 80kbs sounds good to you blink.gif

I can not stand 128kbs wma and can tell the difference of 160kbs and sometimes 192kbs.

I can not stand ogg below 80kbs it starts to sound too sharp and metalic sounding
plus the loss off detail in the voice.

wma pro is another story though...

Try ogg definetly

For me best OGG quality setting for flash player is -q0 (~64kbps). If WMA 80kbs sounds good to you, i recommended to use OGG aoTuV -q-1 (~48kbps).

I use the Archer aoTuV B3 at q2 in my IAudio G3 and with the right EQ/BBE settings it sounds divine. It sounds like Lame MP3 at 160Kbps.

If you want to pack more you can crank it to q1 but then it sounds like good FM quality and I can start to hear some artifacts. But it can be good enough if you put quantity over quality.

After hours of testing, I decided that Archer aoTuV B3 at q2 (~96kbps vbr) is the minimum acceptable setting for me. I also discovered that "WMA9.1 Q25" (approx. 85kbps vbr on most songs), and even wma-Q10 (~64kbps), is superior to OGG q1 and lower for me. Thus, wma is acceptable at a lower bit rate for me. This difference is evident listening to the synth in the first 6 seconds of Van Halen: Dreams. As a fan of open source, I have a difficult decision to make. I'll likely use wma q10 or q25 (same quality as ogg-q2 to me but smaller) when I encode, and I'll keep using wma-q50 for allofmp3.com downloads because they seem to be using an older wma encoder. Sounds great... just need to tap the equalizer down a notch or two on the high end. Thank you all for the suggestions and tips.

Yeah, difficult decision like chosing between "good'n'cheap cereal" for $1.05 and "good'n'cheap -- but produced by sadisticly controlled child labor -- cereal" for $1

So Q1.9 was a no go?

whuaa if wma is even better then Vorbis (ogg is just the container) q1 for you.... there must be something wrong or you just have to stick with wma..

try ogg q -1...

btw try mp3 with alt preset standard on your flash player... I am just curious how you like that...
