So I've read that Ape support on the Mac is a bit limited. I'm just curious, is work being done on it?

Well, the last entry in the Mac OS X thread on the Monkey's forum was in September 2004 smile.gif

It was from Steve Bryan who was working on the only new player to feature APE support. Development seems to have ended on that project (I donated as well...grrrrrr) and as it stands playback is pretty erratic and Musa or apeplay are far more reliable if spartan options.

At the moment the best support is $ shntool conv -o flac *.ape

There's a player called pure audio on macupdate.com. Works very well.
For coding and decoding ape files there was a good little utility called cocoamonkey

It is limited on linux, too though there are some ports found here:

Java MAC implementationMAc non-win32 port

As far as I understand, APE support is beeing dropped from distributions due
to the still unclear license situation, some (including me) consider it beeing a dead format. Though it achieves
compression rates which are superior to FLAC.

I don't know an answer to your question, but the threads above might clear the
situation a bit.

If anyone has a link to a MacOS port, I'd be grateful.
