Hey guys,
I recently downloaded a folder from a torrent website containing 3 CD's. Each CD has about 17 tracks but are all in one mp3 file. They come with cue files. I read that foobar2000 cuts the large file into the appropriate track files as in the cue file. I got foobar2000 and now I have no idea how to achieve this. If anyone could let me know how I could cut the file please let me know ASAP. Sorry if this post is in the wrong place but I wasn't sure where it would be allowed. Thanks!
Regards,
TechnoFreak
fb2k does not do what you described. It's possible to load the cue file in foobar2000 though and use it to play individual song and just keep the MP3s as they are.
The second option would be to use a tool like
MP3DirectCut to cut the MP3 file. Playback of the MP3 file won't be gapless anymore though afterwards.
I don't know if that's entirely true, dev0.
I don't know if it works for mp3s, but I've done the following with FLACs:
Create a tag on the giant mp3 called CUESHEET and paste the contents of the cuesheet into the tag. You might have to remove the file from your playlist and then re-add it to see the change. From there you should be able to use the DiskWriter tool to split them up/re-encode the files or whatever.
Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes you can do that (or you don't even need the %cuesheet% tag), but it would transcode the file and lower the quality significantly as the input file is already lossy.

Is there a tool that can cut up an AC3 file in a similar way, without reencoding?

BeSplit can do that.
Thank you!
edit: well, it doesn't seem to work right, according to foo_bitcompare, the tracks made by that and the tracks loaded from the cuesheet are different, only the first track is the same, but even that one reports a different length. Tracks that fade into each other do not work because of that. I don't know if AC3 is gapless or not, so this may be a problem with the format itself.
Also, the frame number for the cut up AC3 tracks is different from the ones loaded via cuesheet. Is there any remedy for this?
I'll give that musicutter a try, sounds great! I was using mp3directcut, but it doens't support OGG...

One thing to note with musiCutter.
After you have cut the mp3, use foobar's fix mp3 header on each of the cut mp3's to make sure that players will report the correct track lengths.

that program seems quite inaccurate...I've just tried to cut a VBR mp3 file using a cuesheet...first song was supposed to have a length of 2:50, but was cut after 2:39...the next song has a duration of 10:10, but musiCutter cut it after 11:34...great

and you may need to delete all the tags, then retag. (guess tags from filename). Or at least I've had to do this on cut/joined tracks

have you put the original mp3 through foobar's mp3 header fix before cutting it ?
I tried with a OGG, and it said "invalid file", but I can hear it perfectly in Foobar and in Winamp... doesn't work exactly well :/

no, but why should I do that? The file has been encoded with LAME and --preset standard , so there's a LAME-Header and everything...
