Full Version: WaveGain Question

ClassicalGasser
I'm reencoding my classical CDs for listening to at work (very noisy, even with ear canal phones) and I'm using WaveGain to make the very dynamic ones a little louder. Now, if the analysis says a song needs 8db boost but it's already at 32767, do I need to lower the gain so it doesn't go over 6db ? I suppose I could run it through twice to get the necessary gain, but I don't really like that idea.

It would be much better to use some dynamic range compression in this situation.

The dynamic compressor in foobar is as good a place to start as any. You could do the ReplayGaining at the same time if you wanted - no need for separate WaveGain. Drop the files into the play list, enable and adjust the dynamic compressor to your liking, make sure ReplayGain and DSP are enabled for conversion, and convert to whatever format you want - all from inside Foobar.

There are plenty of other dynamic compressors out there. Many cost money. Foobar doesn't. :-) However, others may be better, and come with useful presets.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
David.

Alternate solution: use foobar2000, replaygain and a limiter to avoid clipping. I've found this solution "cleaner" than dynamic compressor.
