This may be a silly question, but I was wondering what people do with replaygain on CD Box sets. Do you calculate the album gain on the individul disks in that box set, or do you calculate the album again across all the disks in the box set?

Thanks!
kjoonlee
I normally do album gain per disc. Fortunately, the album gain didn't differ very much in my experience.

I would probably do ag for each cd, but it would still be an evaluation I would do in each separate case, as there might be situations where I would think otherwise.

I would say it depends on the kind of box set.
if it is a sampler box (i.e. various artists) I would apply trackgain, if it is only one band or artist, albumgain for each album separately would come to mind.

It depends.

On smaller box sets like up to five or six discs I do album gain across the whole set.

On bigger box sets (I have some with 40 or 50 CDs) I do album gain on individual discs or across groups of discs within the set.

for box sets that use varying quality of sources, i'd use track gain.
for box sets that don't, i'd use album gain
for box sets that are just a buch of tracks, i'd combine the box set with album gain.

seriously, how many box sets do you have that contain 40-50 CDs...

i don't even think it's even called a "box set" at that quantity, either smile.gif

I'd do replaygain per disc.
Only exception might be a "work" that is split over more than 1 disc (like an opera or so).

(the answers about track gain did not apply to the question tongue.gif )

I have eight box sets with 40 CDs and one with 50 CDs.

They are certainly not your typical box sets, but they affect quite a lot of discs and therefore should be mentioned, I think.

Hi,

Normaly, I would do "Album gain" on individual disc.

But sometimes, on a live show that spans on several discs (like Genesis Archives 1969-75, the first 2 CDs are the 'Lambs Lies Down on Broadway' tour live) It wouln't make sense to apply 2 different 'album gain' value for these 2 disc.
For the remaining 2 CDs in the box, I did replaygained each one of them in album mode, individualy.

Hope it helps.

Ciao!

That's exactly what I do too.
I'm a bit late with my reaction, I know...
