Full Version: Seeking CD Rippers That Use the GoGo encoder

NanoTechnoPhile
Greetings,

I'm looking for a GUI CD ripper that can speedily rip CD audio tracks into MP3 files on my Windows 98SE-equipped PC. For my purposes, I am willing to sacrifice some sound quality in favor of quicker rips.

From what I've read on some MP3 info sites, the GoGo encoder (based on an earlier version of the Lame encoder, perhaps v3.88) is usually twice as fast in ripping CD tracks into MP3 files. The Lame_enc.dll v3.90.3 that I currently use in conjunction with my AudioCrusher v1.4 CD ripping freeware (from http://sysdesk.de ) is painfully slow.

Hence, I am specifically seeking any GoGo encoder-based GUI CD ripper (preferably, but not necessarily, one that is small in file size) that offers the following:

1) can rip CD tracks directly, on-the-fly, into MP3 files, without creating any temporary WAV files during the ripping process

2) has CBR (Constant Bit Rate) bitrate options of 128 Kbs, 160 Kbs, 192KBs, 224 Kbs, 256 Kbs, and 320 Kbs

3) has stereo mode options of both Stereo and Joint Stereo

4) allows me to select the output folder for my ripped MP3 files

Thanks for any help in my search.

Ripping is independent of mp3 encoding. Any ripper that allows use of commandline programs can use gogo.exe.

I think you will find that EAC (Exact Audio Copy) is the recommeded ripper at HA and will also allow you to use any encoder you'd like.

EAC can do all you want, except 1). AFAIK no ripper can do this, as the wav files on CD are read only and must be (temporary) saved on hd.
although EAC's main purpose is it to rip securely, it also can be configured to rip very fast (though possibly not as accurate).
see this thread for further guides on how to set up EAC.

btw, please dont do double posts.

edit: dreamliner77 was (much) faster ^^

Actually there is (was? lost track of it since i'm not interested in it) a cd ripper that encodes directly from cd into mp3s without the need for any temporary files, but since I don't want to promote an app using the xing codec which is best avoided I'll keep the name to myself (at least for the time being wink.gif).

I think you're wrong. I know that foobar2000 can encode any CD in mp3 without creating a temporary wav file corresponding to the full track. It works with lame mp3, and also with gogo. Unfortunately for NanoTechnoPhile, I can't give you the exact command line working with fb2k's diskwriter, but other users may help you.
If I'm not wrong, other rippers are also able to rip into mp3 without creating temporary files (Cdex as example? I'm not sure anymore).

Digga,

Sometimes people's assumptions of what they think is the truth need to be corrected with proof. With all due respect, FYI, there are indeed many CD rippers that can indisputably rip CD audio tracks directly into MP3 files without creating any large, temporary WAV files. In fact, the very CD ripper I've been using for several months with v3.90.3 of the Lame_Enc.dll, AudioCrusher v1.4 (please see http://www.tzi.de/~hkuehnle/sysdesk/projec...usher/index.htm ), does not ever create any temporary WAV files on my hard disk during the ripping process -- absolutely none. The ONLY CD rippers I use (and will ever use) are those that do NOT plant temporary files on my hard disk.

Other CD rippers (that use Lame [not GoGo]) which I've tried in the past that also rip CD tracks into MP3 files without adding any temporary files include:

Anyway, if anyone else can still help me find a GoGo encoder-based GUI CD ripper (NOT command-line) with the features I've listed in my original post, I'd be most grateful. Thanks.

I don't remember any ripper that would not be able to rip directly to mp3 using the Lame/Gogo dll. The prefered rippers here are EAC and CDex, so I suggest you try those.

But honestly, I don't know why you're afraid of rippers that use temp files. And I absolutely don't understand why you want to sacrifice quality for speed. You encode once, listen many times. I think the time spent encoding is always worth it. Plus, latest Lame encoders are pretty fast.

Maybe nanotechnophile doesnt know, i checked - lame 396 encodes about half as quick as gogo using -q5, making nearly as good mp3s as 'full' quality preset. its faster than gogo at -q9 but that might be worse quaility

This is extremely misguided. I use EAC, and it provides the option to delete the temp files after EACH track has been completely encoded. Look here.

The part about 'encode/rip once, listen many times' makes plenty of sense, hence I use EAC. But well, whatever floats your sampan...

Two nitpicks about taking screenshots. lalala.gif

1) Use "Alt+Print Screen" to capture just the window and avoid ugly cropping.
2) Use PNG. No artifacts, lower size.

Very offtopic, but too many people do it wrong. smile.gif

NanoTechnoPhile: Well, looking at your question, I think Cdex will work for you as it does everything you need.
There's only one problem. I think it doesn't come with Gogo DLL, but you can find it at Rarewares. (You only need to copy the dll to your cdex folder and after this configure cdex settings pressing F4 and choosing Gogo Nocoda DLL Encoder..)

You can find CDex here:
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

Erm, I used Alt+Print Screen...

It's what happens when you patch uxtheme.dll and use msstyles I guess, but I'm not complaining..

I usually can't find artifacts in the jpgs I make, but I'll create pngs next time.
