Full Version: Canīt get good compress ratios

I just canīt get the compress ratios that are listed on various tests and the programs homepage. They all claim to achieve an overall compress ratio of 54% to 58%.
I tried both with MAC(version 3.99, compression "high")and FLAC(1.12a with 1.7.1 frontend, compression level 6).

The .wav files have 335MB.

In FLAC just 2 files achieve 55%, and all others were above 65% aprox. Total of 228MB.

In MAC I get better compression, but the results are similar to FLAC. Total of 221MB.

Is there a way to improve it??

The compression rate varies a lot, depending of the music you feed the encoders.
Silence compress very well, while complex music compress less!

Ex. with FLAC I have seen bitrates anywhere between 300kbps and 1100kbps. wink.gif

Try other formats, more optimized for compression ratio than speed, like OptimFROG. Don't expect miracles though.

Expect Black Metal to compress very little, silent classical chamber music to compress very well.... If compression is the one feature you look for in a lossless codec (and don't mind slow speed/high CPU consumption) you should go for OptimFROG (there's also another that compresses even better called LA, but my advice, stay away).
