Full Version: Help create a logo for LAME

Hello.

I'm now pretty much the "official" webmaster of the Lame project. I talked to Gabriel about creating a new site design for LAME in time for the 4.0 or 3.97 release, and he gave me a go ahead.

I guess we can all agree the current site design does no justice to LAME's importance. But, more severe than that, there is no real logo to represent the encoder other than some half-assed atempts - and some that could even lead to legal harassment.

So, I would like to invite the forum users with talent for graphic manipulation to come up with a LAME logo. Later, I will work around this logo to create the page design.

The logo should, as much as possible, reflect what LAME is about: music, signal processing, quality... (not necessarily all of these at once, of course)

And, of course, please don't break trademarks and copyrights wink.gif

If you can, upload the Logos you create to a web space and link it here. Or, use this thread at the upload forum and put here a link to the post.

I'm not sure how the winner will be decided, I suspect it'll be at the LAME developers' discretion. But I'm sure users' opinions will be welcome, so fell free to comment on yours and other people's designs.

Thank-you very much for your help.

Regards;

Roberto.

Edit: here is the "official" announcement:

Erm... of course, needless to say, you must waive your rights regarding the logo you create, specially if it ends up to be the chosen one. This is pretty much a given, but it won't hurt to make it very clear...

That is, you should release your logo for the Public Domain. tongue.gif

IMO it would be nice to make a clean start with LAME 4.0. Clean code, new logo, etc.

If I weren't suffering from sleep deprivation today I might have tried imitating the current lamelogo.gif in SVG vector format, filled with gradients.
Gambit
Moderation note: I have removed the "funny" post. I think the LAME people are looking for a serious logo, not something that could win a Beate Uhse contest.

Let's face it, most people on this board aren't graphic artists. I think it would be smart to advertise this on forums where talented designer people hang out. Check out some of the mac-forums as an example..

Noone here good with graphics? You missed all the contributions that were made when searching for a HA logo?

Haven't seen those. Perhaps my paintbrush was a bit to wide wink.gif
Anyways, my point is that it would be smart to advertise this as a logo contest to a wider audience.

I think before the rush is started we have to consider the following questions:
1. Who will be jury? Users? LAME developers?
2. Of what size and shape the logo must be? Square? Circular? Rectangular?
3. How many colors should be used.

IMHO on question 2 and 3 - the logo must be
A. As simple as possible and easy to copy (by hand)
B. Square
C. 1-3 colors (not gradient)

The NetBSD community, has startet a similiar contest for a new logo months ago. They recieved about 239 logos all over the world. Publish your request on slashdot.org! there are many people out there wich can help u, but u need to make this "logo contest" official. put it on the official website of lame.sourceforge.net, set a timelimit of 6 months?..., and make an homepage where u write the "rules" for the new logo. if u do it on the right way we will have a real good logo!
The NetBSD logo launch u could read it on every good IT-News Page and mag arround the world!

Just wanted to let you know that I posted about this on the IPS company forums. There are a lot of talented designers there.

Looks good Josef! But shouldn't all the letters be uppercase? Keep the a, m & e the same size just make them uppercase. See how that looks.
Josef K.
I'll do it as soon as possible (in few hours). There are even three versions of the letters in this font, so I have to explore it little bit...

And how about aligning the dots with vertical bars on the letters?

Honestly, I don't think what we want here justifies going for Slashdot. It's just a logo for an MP3 encoder project. We just want a logo that better represents Lame...

And there's also the point that noone is offering a cash prize for creator of the chosen logo wink.gif

I believe we can come up with a very good logo starting this campaign at HA, and letting people spread the information about it at places they deem appropriate. Good examples of that were the submissions to HA's new logo contest.

Very talented and nice people everaldo
I am not sure what the outcome will be, but someone should at least attempt to send them a note.

I hope that the new site will contain all about LAME ( history, sources, binaries, comparisons, testimonials, developer profiles etch ).

I believe the final decision will be up to Lame's developers (the few that are still active), like the final decision about HA's logo was at the administration team's discretion. And in this case, like that one, user comments will be surely welcome.

Same as above. Just use common sense, and taste. If your logo looks better in monochrome, so be it. If you need a carnival to convey your vision of a perfect Lame logo, it won't be frowned upon either.

They do look good indeed. But could you explain what the dots are supposed to mean, if anything? smile.gif

Also, people, let's remember this logo will be used at the web site and a few software supporting Lame. Maybe some pieces of literature too. No need to worry too much about making it fit every possible use. This is not a BSD or anything. We're just trying to give Lame a better representative image.

Binaries probably won't be there, for the usual reason of patents, etc.

But yes, everything else would be a welcome addition. The testimonials is a particularly terrific idea. I'll start a thread asking for them once I start working on the design. Thanks.

Last but not least, very big thanks to everyone that is contributing proposals and spreading the request. smile.gif

But could you explain what the dots are supposed to mean, if anything?

1) dots are based on L.A.M.E way of writting
2) they difuse more with each step to suggest the way codec is compressing (=diluting) music. (Maybe to abstract crying.gif )
Of course most important is if it works or not (I mean in my draft - L.A.M.E works perfect wink.gif ).

Haha! I like it. Maybe a little too stylized (in my own personal opinion), but the colors and the freshness (that is, it doesn't resemble the average corporate logo) make it a very interesting logo indeed smile.gif

Did you create the letters yourself, or is that some font?

Thanks rjamorim -- much appreciated. smile.gif In fact, it's set in an existing TrueType font called Inkburrow, squeezed horizontally, and with a hand-created underline. I think it combines an arty look with a lot of spirit.

Yep, liking this one. I think the 'A' and the 'M' are best in this version.
I'm finding the spacing of the dots a little weird. Can't make my mind up as to whether I like them spaced like that. Maybe they could start smaller and then reach the size they are now with the last one? Plus, I see with the larger versions that they don't start off as circles - I don't think it looks that great when the image is smaller.

I like this very much, and think the 'p3' to the side of the 'M' is a great touch. However, I think that it's gonna be too stylized as Roberto says. It might not stand out as much when it's a small icon size say.

I like that last one Jose but consider adding periods between letters & 'Lame Ain't An Mp3 Encoder' as a subheading.
