I have a bunch of CD's that I ripped as FLAC a while back. I want to get these to mp3 so I can load them on a portable but I can't find all the CD's (I think my ex stole them smile.gif
Is there free software out there that I can use to convert these to mp3s? Also, I still wnt to keep the quality high since all my other mp3 rips are at 320. Any help/guidance/reccomendations?

Thanks in advance

I ripped my entire collection to FLAC and then transcoded it to MP3 using Foobar2000. Results were absolutely excellent. Visit Foobar2000 forum on this site for more detail.

If you use LAME as your MP3 encoder you should get outstanding results, even below 320kbps. I used LAME 3.90.3 with the --alt-preset-standard preset (gives about 256kbps) and have not been disappointed in sound quality. I have read that later versions of LAME like 3.96 are much faster than 3.90.3 (and mostly equal in sound quality), but 3.90.3 is still officially recommended on this site due to its extensive sound quality testing.

Both Foobar2000 and LAME are free.

Another vote for Foobar2000.
Once it is configured correctly it is simple to convert flac to mp3 or whatever.

And another one for Foobar2000

Drag your FLAC-files in the main window., select them, rightclick, convert, choose MP3 preset standard or preset extreme. That is all you need.

One more point: Foobar2000 has the ability to use ReplayGain when transcoding, which I find very helpful for leveling the large average volume differences between albums while preserving the track to track differences.

Why rerip if your flac rips are ok?

actually i have been thinking to do the same thing. start ripping my cds in flac (to backup them in dvds) and then convert the flacs into mp3 for my pc nad portable.

the thing is that i do not liki foobar. i am a fan of winamp and i think that i will continue to use it. is there any other prog that can do that conversion?
Synthetic Soul
dbPowerAmp springs to mind.

NB: Whether you like Foobar as a player is irrelevant. Use Winamp to play and Foobar to convert if that suits. Foobar is not bloatware, so there should be no problem with installing the Lite version with only the necessary components (Flac decoder, Diskwriter and CLI encoder) and using Foobar solely as a transcoder.

If you do though, be warned: you will end up using it more and more for most things audio-related.

ok, i ripped the Black Album of Metallica to flac using eac. then i added the flacs into foobar and went to convert them to mp3. i 've made some slight changes at preferences. the thing is that during the conversion, foobar pops up the Console and it has some errors at some songs which i notice later when play them in winamp. i have saved the txt file if anyone wants to see it.
the problem is that i don't know how to use the image insertion in order to post my 2 images of the foobar preferences.

tell me how to do that and then i think that you may help me to correct the preferences.

i've noticed that easy cd-da extractor 8.0.2 has error correction and repair. so i think that i'll be using this prog to rip in flac and then convert them to mp3.

by the way, the flacs that i ripped using eac had decompression problem when i tried to convert them to mp3 with easy cd-da extractor.

anyway, i'll experiment a bit and then we will see.
