I have become aware of the issue that some of the other ipods have with --preset standard files, but is the ipod shuffle able to play them without skipping? (I'm assuming at this stage that it can....)
Does the shuffle have issues with non-itunes AAC as well?

iPod shuffle plays LAME aps files without problems.
It also handles FAAC with out a hiccup. As well as QuickTime VBR aac
