Full Version: A propostion for Replaygain

Hello
Replaygain is a fantastic tool, but has also some problems: the bigest for me, is what mode to choose.
If you choose Track gain, the loudness differences between tracks are not preserved.
But if you choose album, and if you listen some albums with big dynamic differences it will sometime not work: who has never met a track with a track gain of +15 althought the album gain is at -5 ? The result is that in album mode you won't hear anything.
So i had a simple idea: would it be possible to create a new mode like "TrAlbum mode" which would set the gain for the track somewhere like the mean between the track and album gain (perhaps there could be better formulas), so that some of the gain difference between the tracks is preserved.

What do you think ?

(sorry for my english)

I don't think the replaygain tool should be changed for this purpose. You actually want a change in the playback behaviour. You should contact the developer of your audio player of choice so that there are more than the current two playback modes "album gain", "track gain".

I completely fail to see here how this is a limitation of ReplayGain or why it is necessary to change anything on the ReplayGain side.

In fact, I completely fail to see the problem at all:

This can't happen unless the CD was intentionally made like that (with over 20dB volume difference between tracks), in which case it's, well, intentional.

I think you bought the wrong CD or that you are misunderstanding the artist's artistic intention or something.

You are both right, this should be on the player side.

So why use replaygain at all since it' "artistic intention" ?

If you use album mode you're not really violating "artistic intention."
