Full Version: lossy BitSampleRate?

Dear members,

This is a bit theoretical question:
CD audio has data stream 16 b 44 kHz:

DVD audio could be 24 bit 96 kHz:

But which params has lossy data stream? I can see only SampleRate = 44 kHz, but how to find out lossy BitSampleRate?

Please, don’t kill me with this silly question…
I appreciate your help very much.

The number of bits per sample effectively controls the dynamic range and signal to noise ratio of a digital audio system. The SNR of lossy codecs is extremely variable - it can swing widely from frame to frame. It is therefore not sensical to define a number of bits per sample for lossy encoded streams. However, if you insist on using that measure then bitrate/(2*samplerate) will give you the average number of bits per sample.
