So, I was trying to switch my email address that I used to create this account because its not there anymore. Then, I realized why I used it in the first place after I got this gem:

"Sorry, your e-mail address is banned. Most common free e-mail providers are blocked. Please use your ISP, university, or other commercial e-mail account instead."

Now, I cannot see any reason why you block free email providers. I use Yahoo email, and I pay for it, so its certainly not free for me. Why it would be blocked, I fail to see. Perhaps someone can look into this?

The purported reason is that spammers, after being banned once, get accounts at free e-mail providers to register again and continue spamming.

Although I agree that does not seem to be a very effective method, since it is quite easy to find obscure free e-mail providers these days, not to mention providers that allow you to choose among countless domain names for your e-mail.

Yes im sure it is, but I would rather not have 389432903 different emails to check. I wasnt aware that people spamming the boards was that big of a problem.

Garf
I would much rather have a system like doom9 where there is a delay after registering (or for example, only if you reg with a free email).

But there is noone available with the time and skills to add such a feature.

As it is, the current system is surprisingly effective, mostly because there is an inverse relation between intelligence and the tendency to be an abuser.
archagon
Not intelligence. Patience.
stax
banning yahoo is imho not very smart, sorry
Jan S.
well... eventhough it seems weird this is very effective. When the board was updated and this "feature" disabled by mistake we were flooded with spammers and people with no regard for netiquette.

I do understand that this is annoying since many people use only these free services.
I think we are pretty open to suggestions but this thing has been too effectice to be just removed.

I would like to know if free.fr is part of the banned e-mail providers. Someone told me that he could not register from his free.fr account.

Though free.fr is called "free", it is one of the main ISP in France, together with Wanadoo, Worldonline, AOL etc.

I don't know if they provide free mail accounts besides their ISP activity.

I registered here with my main DSL account (at free.fr), without problems apparently. BTW free also provides free emails and dial up connections.

and a secondary domain, online.fr, which generally passes without any problems.

*@free.fr got added to banlist recently (after spamming attempt using it).

So can you tell me if any of the free emal-addresses are not banned? Because I am using my dad's (to sign up) and now I need to change it. So can you tell me any?
Garf
Do not use a free email address here, I thought this was pretty clear from the thread??
Crazysah
I don't have a paid mail address. Thats the problem... So what do I do?
Garf
You already managed to register, so the answer would be: nothing?
Crazysah
No no. I used it to register. Now I need to change it. My dad only let me use it to register. So what do I do? I need to change it.

I vaguely recall a topic back when I first joined HA about the Admins switching your email to a free account (one you specify) if you PM them. I remember it because I was also wondering about the free email account ban (I tried registering with gmail).

I would like it if that were an option to people who have been registered for 30 Days or something. I used my @Cox.net account (from California) to register. I live in Minnesota now and don't have my old email address. So, if a moderator ever needed to get ahold of me that way, that mod is SOL. And, me too probably, I would imagine a valid email would be a requirement in a forum as strict as this one.

[edit]
I mean strict in a good way, haha.

AFAIR I've registered to HA with my free email account on centrum.cz which is the 2nd biggest free email provider here in Czech Republic. Is it possible to change my account registration here at HA to gmail.com if my centrum.cz account would be added to your ban-list? unsure.gif

If yes, how? blink.gif

I use my Gmail address for all my forum notification, but I have to use alternative email address just for this forum. I've Yahoo Plus, and I can't use it. Shame. sad.gif
Crazysah
So we can PM a mod and then they can change it?
Jan S.
Mods can't help you. Admins can.
See a list here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....ts&CODE=leaders

Don't PM Dibrom... he probably can't help you but the rest should change the email on request.
Crazysah
Ahh.. Will do it tomorrow. Thanks.

out of curiosity, any ideas on why hbar.stanford.edu would fail? it didn't give me the "free email providers are banned" message, it just said "you must enter a valid email address".

yes, i did type it correctly.

interestingly enough, using the alias physics.stanford.edu (same machine) worked fine.

any admins want to comment? i'm just curious what happened.

HA server tries to DNS-resolve the host before accepting an email address and shows an error message like what you report if that fails. Sounds like a DNS problem.
davidd
yea, I didn't like the email address thing either, none of my addresses worked, so I had to sign up for a free aim one, and that worked
CarlosTheTackle
Try one of the spamgourmet forwarding addresses and have it forwarded to your Yahoo account.

The DNS resolves fine here, although the rDNS points to a different host. Maybe that is causing the problem.

I suspect the server performed an rDNS lookup on the IP 171.67.100.119, and found it did not match what you had entered (you entered hbar.stanford.edu and the rDNS resolves to physics.Stanford.EDU). When you changed the address to physics.stanford.edu, the rDNS matched the host you entered so the server allowed it.

That said, the email address I signed up with has a different rDNS to the hostname I entered (my server is hosted at Layered Technologies and the rDNS of all their servers resolves to the server IP backwards on a dedicated rDNS server [ie. server IP 1.2.3.4 is resolved to 4-3-2-1.reverse.layeredtech.com]) and it accepted that fine.

Was I not meant to be able to change it myself? blink.gif Whoops.

Is there a reason that you can't change your email address once you've registered? I registered using my charter email, however, I don't have charter anymore. Which is strange actually, since I can check my charter email... I'd like to switch my email to my gmail but even though I used a valid email address to register, I can't change it to a "free" email provider...

edit... Didn't see the reply about emailing an admin.
