I have been ripping my entire CD collection using Lame 3.96.1 and the -V1 setting. To my years this sounds quite fine. On a few CDs, particularly older jazz made from lower quality/olders masters (Art Tatum Complete Capitol Recordings, for example), the V1 option is crearting MP3 files that are basically 128k-- on some others it is around 156k. Is this normal? It doesn't seem like V1 should ever produce bitrates that low?

Those Art Tatum recordings are mono, so those bitrates are perfectly fine and normal.
