Full Version: DVI, what a hassle.

Hi people,

I have recently bought a new TFT and have tried to set it up via a DVI-D connection to my DVI-I Gigabyte graphics card.

However, when all is running, the screen runs intermittently when booting into windows/linux (with odd red bits around the writing) and then displays nothing when a desktop is loaded (it shows the windows 2000 logo screen saver though).

I have changed the cable with no joy, but I've found I have no way to tell if the problem is the tft or the graphics card since noone I know has DVI compatible components.

Any suggestions would be superb.

Thanks.

EDIT: (oops, didn't realise there was an A/V forum... if someone wants to move this please do)

Join the club. I have similar DVI problems. I have attached a Viewsonic VP191b to an ATI X700 via DVI-D. A few minutes after logging in, the FPD reports signal loss. Seems to be a power issue with ATI cards, cuz if I shut down and boot up right after this happens, the problem goes away until the next cold boot a while later. Tons of people are complaining and ATI hasn't done a thing for over a year. I'm using analog for now.

Your issue may be a video card problem. Is your card based on an ATI chipset? Complain to your adapter vendor. I hope you have better luck diagnosing and finding a solution with your Gigabyte card.

It's an nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200.

Can't help but feel I've got a bunch of components that have decided they won't be friends with one another. Iiyama are gonna replace the tft but I'm not hopeful.

Thanks.

I doubt that it has to do with the TFT. It's more likely the graphics card or maybe even the cable. Check out this article. If you have problems with an ATI card, check the option "Reduce DVI frequency" and/or "Alternative DVI mode" in the driver options. For NVIDIA, i don't know what the appropriate settings are called, but they should be there as well.

In my case, no combination of "Reduce DVI frequency" and "Alternative DVI mode" made a difference. I tried lowering the resolution and refresh rate as well. Also tried a number of recent CATLYST drivers.... no luck. On the 3D Rage forum, numerous users are furious and experiencing similar DVI signal loss issues. sad.gif

Given that the DVI problem occurs during boot (i.e. before any OS is selected), surely this can't be an issue with nVIDIA driver settings?

Hm, right. What happens if you run it on analogue?

It's fine with an analogue connection.
