Full Version: Writing ANSI ID3v2 tags with foobar2000 0.9b5

Hello!

Was support for writing ANSI ID3v2 tags removed in foobar2000 0.9? I would like not to write unicode tags since the tagger I use does not support them yet.

Regards,
Sebastian

Yes, that option was removed. ID3v2 does not officially support ANSI encoding anyway, only buggy programs (for example Winamp) write ANSI encoded tags and flag them as ISO 8859-1 or even Unicode.
Sebastian Mares
Is it possible to add ISO 8859-1 support then?

What part of "that option was removed" did you not understand. ANSI encoding is not supported by the ID3v2 standard, and was off by default in foo_id3v2. foobar2000 0.9b5 writes completely legal MP3 tags.

This has already been discussed over many pages throughout the main beta threads.

I didn't say they are illegal - they're just unicode. I would like to set foobar2000 to write non-unicode tags (I guess that's ISO 8859-1 and not ANSI as I said in the first post, sorry).

hey man.
just use id3v1 + APEv2 tags.

ISO-8859-1 itself is not perfectly compatible. Some players, notably iTunes, handle the problem of misflagged encoding by totally ignoring any frames marked as ISO-8859-1.
Sebastian Mares
So there won't be any other option that writing unicode tags with foobar2000?

That might be, but it would be nice to have to be able to choose based on what players you use.

I personally use MP3Tag for tagging my files, but the software unfortunately doesn't support unicode yet. sad.gif

I think that's off-topic, but anyways - I want ID3v2 due to compatibility reasons with other software and hardware players. I am not talking about including cover arts, but I have some tracks with more than 30 charactes or I use some non ID3v1 fields.

Not everyone bought an ipod, so theres still a lot of people who need ID3v2 for portable players.
tool++
But most port. players have a screen that is tinyenough to take advantage of ID3v1 only. Thats the whole idea of doing APE2 + ID3V1...

A lot of them scroll the titles if its too long to fit on the screen too. wink.gif

Try using a tagger that supports Unicode then. =)
for example, the Foobar masstagger would be a quite obvious choice.
Sebastian Mares
Why can't we just stick to the topic? I do NOT want to use APEv2 and I do NOT want to switch the tagger yet. mad.gif
I simply ask if a future version of foobar2000 will be able to write non-unicode ID3v2 tags.
ssamadhi97
likely not.
Sebastian Mares
Thanks for the answer. smile.gif

Yeah, that really can be slightly annoying at times, whenever you request a feature, someone points out that their method is better, diffrent people have diffrent needs, and it kinda annoys me that foobar takes away user-choice it used to have. (same with only beeing able to have to types of tags).

(just a little rant, not directed to anyone in particular, I really like foobar, but no product can be perfect, can it wink.gif)

Seconded .... the ISO-8859-1 option was very usefull in some circumstances.

Not only is it useful, it allows my Rio Karma not to have ÿ symbols in front of every tag field and contents (granted, the karma's tagging is broken, but nevertheless..)

How about we dodge this bullet completely! Let's all pack those MP3 streams into MP4 containers! The widely used tag format already supports Unicode and is readable in most programs which support MP4. Yeah, there's the ticket... You even get free fast seeking as a bonus...

And kode54 once again forgets about the outside world... Because then he would know that one of the main reasons to use mp3 is compatibility. wink.gif
kode54
Screw compatibility! biggrin.gif

Anyway, someone could easily write a tool for stripping the MP3s out of those containers and attaching ID3 tags, perhaps on the fly in the process of uploading to a flash player. How's that for progress?

If iTunes or iPod supported MP3-in-MP4, or foo_tunes supported at least the stripping process above, then it'd be perfect. The tags to the database, the MP3 files to the player.

You mean foo_pod, right? I don't see automatic MP3 stripping for MP3-in-MP4 anywhere in foo_pod... If it already has automatic conversion, then it may even be likely to trigger transcoding.

Oh no, it only has a transcoder. I rather meant you probably meant foo_pod tongue.gif
