Tomorrow is the birthday of the most popular audio format on the planet!

On July 14th, the name “MP3“ celebrates its tenth anniversary. On this day back in 1995, the researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS decided to use “.mp3“ as the file name extension for their new audio coding technology. Soon MP3 became the generally accepted acronym for the ISO standard IS 11172-3 “MPEG Audio Layer 3“.

1995? Isn't MP3 much older, 1987 or something like that?

In 1987, the Fraunhofer IIS started to work on perceptual audio coding in the framework of the EUREKA project EU147, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB). In a joint cooperation with the University of Erlangen (Prof. Dieter Seitzer), the Fraunhofer IIS finally devised a very powerful algorithm that is standardized as ISO-MPEG Audio Layer-3 (IS 11172-3 and IS 13818-3).

MP3 is the shortened name for MPEG-1 Layer III (or MPEG Audio Layer III) and is an audio subset of the MPEG industry standard developed by ISO (the Industry Standards Organization) and became an official standard in 1992 as part of the MPEG-1 standard.

Fraunhofer received a patent in April 1989 for MP3 in Germany and in 1992 Fraunhofer’s algorithm was integrated in MPEG-1 for which the specification was published in 1993.

1994 MPEG-2 and its specification was published the following year in 1995.

January 26th, 1995 saw Fraunhofer apply for the patent of MP3 in the USA and was granted it on November 26th, 1996.

It seems that many bithdate are possible. Which is the good one? When will patents expire?

Let's say it was 10 years ago so we have reason to celebrate.

Just brilliant. smile.gif
Those are the most controversial pieces of imformation I've encountered in a couple of months! smile.gif

I think development started in the 80's, but mp3 as a standard wasn't finalized until 1995

Modern work in audio compression started around 1987, in the context of the Eureka project.
Mpeg-1 audio was standardized in late 1992, including all the 3 layers. However, the ".mp3" file extension only started to be used in 1995.
