Tomorrow is the birthday of the most popular audio format on the planet!
On July 14th, the name “MP3“ celebrates its tenth anniversary. On this day back in 1995, the researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS decided to use “.mp3“ as the file name extension for their new audio coding technology. Soon MP3 became the generally accepted acronym for the ISO standard IS 11172-3 “MPEG Audio Layer 3“.

MP3 is the shortened name for MPEG-1 Layer III (or MPEG Audio Layer III) and is an audio subset of the MPEG industry standard developed by ISO (the Industry Standards Organization) and became an official standard in 1992 as part of the MPEG-1 standard.
It seems that many bithdate are possible. Which is the good one? When will patents expire?

I think development started in the 80's, but mp3 as a standard wasn't finalized until 1995
