I've been experimenting with the recently released DVD-A ripping tools and have come across a problem. DVD-A 5.1 audio seem to be stored in L,R,C,LS,RS,LFE channel order. When trying to play back the ripped wav files in foobar (0.8.3) they get played as L,R,LS,RS,C,LFE. C audio plays from the LS speaker, LS audio plays from the RS speaker, and RS audio plays from the C speaker.

Is this an issue with foobar, the ripped wave file, or just an issue with a lack of standards for multi-channel audio channel order? Is there anyway I can rearrange the channel output so it plays back correctly with foobar?

5.1 channel order is standardized, and foobar2000 follows the standard.

Okay, thanks. I did some digging around online and found something of a whitepaper on DVD-A. It looks like L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS and L,R,LS,RS,C,LFE are the only two valid channel orderings for 5.1 audio. So apparently the PPCMRipper tool that Roberto hosted doesn't produce a truly valid 5.1 wave file.

I believe the problem is that the DVDA channel order is costumazible (?) and as such, it does not always follow the standard that is used by Foobar.

You'll have to rip them into 6 mono wavs and put them together in Cool Edit/Adobe Audition. The channel order can be viewed from the IFO files using DVD Explorer.

Borisz: Thanks for the info, I think I have my problem figured out.

The DVD-A spec allows for both L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS and L,R,LS,RS,C,LFE ordering, but the true standard, the one that foobar follows, is the first ordering. The LFE channel seems to be handled independently, since it played correctly for me in foobar in both orderings. Taking LFE out of the equation, foobar then is left playing L,R,C,LS,RS as L,R,LS,RS,C which is what I observed.

As it ends up, this is not a foobar problem at all, so this post is actually in the wrong section. rolleyes.gif
