I'am new to converting files. I'am using foobar2000. Trying to convert .shn files to mp3 so I can burn them to cd. Can't get it to work. Any help will be apprecciated.

Thank you
smz
Errrrr.... the audio format used by normal CD-DA is *not* mp3, but PCM at 16 bits/samples, 44100 samples/second. So you are definitely on the wrong way.

Anyway, to convert files from foobar2000 you must select the files you want, right click over them and then select Convert->Run conversion. Before that you must define the type of conversion you want (Right click, Convert->Settings). This will be "WAV (PCM, fixed point)" for files that are to be burned on a CD-DA.

Before proceeding I suggest you to get a grasp on basic digital audio technology reading the Hydrogenaudio knowledge base pages.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. I've got that far........ but when I choose to convert foobar asks me to choose an output directory? What do I choose?

dreamliner77
The output directory is where you'd like to save the new files.

Whatever you like! Or in the preferences tick "Same as source directory" to put the converted files in the same directory (folder) as the originals.

It still doesn't work. Sorry I'm bugging you with this trivial (for you) problem. I've downloaded some free Jack Johnson audio from archive.org in the form of .shn files and would like the ability to burn them to CD in order to play in my car and home theatre etc... I know I'm doing something wrong..... I just don't know what.

You need the Shorten (.shn) plugin for foobar2000. You can download it here:

m0rbidini
If you use Nero you can also try the following plugin from http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org:

http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org/files/nxmyshn.zip

I don't know if it works, since I never tested it and it's a bit old. But I think it's worth checking.

edit: also, if you have Nero you can burn the files with foobar2000. Just grab a SHN plugin for fb2k, right click the tracks you want to burn and select "Write Audio CD...".

You can burn Audio CD's from Shorten files with Burrrn also, but Shorten support are a bit unfinished, time doesn't display right, as discussed here.
It should work OK anyway if you take care that total lenght of files you want to burn doesn't exceed medias capacity (you can check lenght in a player like foobar2000 or Winamp with theire respective Shorten plugins). Downloads from archive.org are already organized in disks (a live show organized as disk 1, disk 2 and so forth), so with 80 min media you should be pretty safe.
