Hi,

I am about to buy a dvd/cdrom reader and I would choose between the following:

DVD-ROM Liteon LTD 163
NEC DVD-ROM 5800 16X 48X

Are there any issues I should take into account?
Do you know other products with similar prices that could be a better choice?

Thanx in advance.
CiTay
From these two, get the Lite-On. I had a NEC 5800A before, and it's really a fast for DAE, but not completely reliable. Every other minute, the red "read problem" lights in EAC light up for no apparent reason, even on brand new CDs. I often had 99.x% read quality for many tracks. Of course, all those errors were corrected by EAC's secure mode, but still...

I now have a Toshiba SD-M1612, which i bought after careful examination of several trustworthy reviews. Fast, reliable, good error correction.

Thanx a lot, Citay. biggrin.gif
I also have a Lite On burner and it has been a real good value buy.

they make great drives.

i believe the 165 can read dvdr's as well...

---TOSHIBA SD-M1612 16X/48X, EIDE, bulk----?
PIONEER DVD-106SZ, 16x/40x, slot, EIDE, bulk

I'd like to know which one would you choose smile.gif I'm looking for good CD/DVD performance but especially DAE biggrin.gif

Thanks.

The Sony DDU1621 is quite unable to play DVDs (freezing after one minute, loads of user complaints), and raises a mess in the system (BSOD at Windows opening in a friends computer, illegal operations from software accessing it here...)

TOSHIBA SD-M1612, definitely.

I have the Lite-On 166S, it caches audio but is fast and very reliable and seems very good with C2 enabled in EAC, though i personally leave it off for extra security! It's better than my Lite-On 48-12-48S and as reliable as my 12-10-32A P:lextor was before i gave it away!

For my first ~25 cd's which i ripped, i tested and ripped and never had an error reported or CRC mismatch.

Also, in the UK, it only cost me ~£35 which u can't really beat!!

Cheers

Krisian

/EDIT

Also it can apparently read a LOT of different DVD media Types, and they have regular firmware updates as well

I don't know which version/firmware of the drive he has, but he's wrong. EAC correctly reports that it is caching, and C2 is off. I don't know about the claim with the false samples; however, EAC's secure mode is almost exclusively giving me 100% quality for new CDs (while, for instance, the NEC DV-5800A very often gave me 99.x and 98.x% on brand new CDs), so i don't know what the fuss is about.

I also never hear clicks/pops, unless the CD is really scratched of course.

So it'll be the Tosh:) Many Thanks!

I actually bought it and am quite happy.
I see that with c2 on the drive is ridicolously fast but, I wonder, is it secure?

I have a 40x LitOn burner and from the few reading tests I did with it, it seems to be secure in C2. But I don't know for sure 'cause I use my DVD drive for ripping.

CiTay: How fast is the DVD ripping with the TOSHIBA?

None of the above, cept maybe the Sony1621 which is a rebadged Btc BD316B
I used CD Speed as a guide for buying mine.

Aopen 1640dvd. Slot loading is best, since nobody makes caddy based.
EAC secure: 5.5x
DVD(Smartripper): ~7x avg (tops at 11x)

I would be interested in seeing speed results of whatever drive ya get.
