I'm trying to decide whether to d/l my cd collection on my new hard drive as MPEG4 audio or MP3. It seems as though MPEG4 is the default on itunes but I notice it will not play on WMP. Anyone have any suggestions about which will be better in the long run?

Go for LAME 3.96.1 or 3.97a11 MP3. It offers best compatibility, and can easily compete with current MPEG4 audio encoders on quality at several bitrate ranges.

And MP3 will play in WMP out-of-the-box, which will be an added bonus for you.

Current AAC encoders are more interesting than MP3 for low bitrates encodings. Try to see if you can hear a difference. Currently, MP3 has by far the best hardware and software support. Keep it in mind smile.gif
