I'm thinking about purchasing a textbook that describes the use of Pro-Tools. The author uses version 6.1 in all his examples and labs. (tutorials) He states we should be able to download a "free"(Pro-Tools LE v6.1) copy of this version?

My problem is this: The only version their web-site (DigiDesign) is allowing me to download (for free) is version 5.1 AND when I try to install this version, the software states that I need "A version of Windows 98 SE OR Newer"....I'm running Windows XP Home on my system?

Has anyone here ever encountered any of these problems and is Pro-Tools worth all this effort?

It won't run on anything later than 98 (except maybe ME)? I believe there's also a Mac OS 9 version, but nothing for OS X.

And it is not likely that we will ever see an updated free version, according to a Digidesign representative I've spoken with.

I recommend Digidesign Mbox with Pro Tools LE or an M-Audio soundcard with Pro Tools M-Powered.

EDIT: This is not an answer to your question, but for people not in the mood of spending bucks, have a look at
Kristal Audio Engine (Cubase "clone")
JAZZ++
Hammerhead Rythm Station

I tried that. It installed OK, but wouldn't run - maybe someone savvier than me could figure out why, but I suspect it's going to be a tough nut to crack.

ProTools Free never installed on my XP. It gave the same queer message. Since I never got it to run.... can't answer dry.gif
