Lately I noticed EAC was not ripping past 8x on certain CDs Even though the max was set to 40x (The option to allow speed reduction was also set). I installed Plextools v2.25.
This issue has been covered in the
Why does my Plextor sometimes throttle back to 8x? thread. I suggested high BLER was a possible culprit there; I tend to think now it is really any one (or a combination) of several factors like the disc's reflectivity, balance etc.

I noticed Speed Read was not activated. (I activated it),
SpeedRead unlocks the drive to read at above the recommended 40X (up to the max, 52X). Plextor doesn't recommend enabling this feature because it can damage the drive and/or the disc. Naturally, enabling SpeedRead has no effect if the drive initializes the disc at 8X CLV.

The speed was also set to 8x CLV. I set it to 18x-40x CAV. I then exited Plextools. Went back to EAC and speed was STILL slow. Went back to Plextools and it was set back to 8x CLV. Even when going into another option box, It reverted back to 8X CLV.
You found out on your own that once the drive initialized the disc and set the read speed, you cannot raise it.

How do I make Plextools STAY at 18-40x
The short answer is: you cannot. See my first post in the linked thread for the explanation.

1) Are you using CDSpeed to slow down the drive?
AFAIK, CDSpeed doesn't work with the Premium. The Premium is controlled via PlexTools Pro.
