Full Version: Problem with kernel streaming AV-710
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Hosted Forums > foobar2000 > Support - (fb2k)

I'm using a Chaintech AV-710

Basically I followed exactly what this guide said to set Kernal Streaming up:
http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=75655

Whenever another program makes a noise the sound cuts off completely. The song is still playing but foobar doesnt output any sound.

I'm using the latest drivers from VIA 451a.

How can I fix this?

There is a quite trivial solution to your problem.

1) Start foobar.
2) Select DirectSound or Waveout.
3) Enjoy.

I also dont have to listen to music, I would have the problem then either would I?

By using directsound instead of kernal streaming. It is dodgy at best. Why do you need to use it?

Kernal Streaming boosts sound quality or so Ive been told

Well, it doesn't. And don't resample if you have a nice soundcard. smile.gif

edit: Here's an explanation. It does mention a case where kernel streaming can be useful, but I doubt it applies to you.

As far as I know, you can't. That's just how kernel streaming works--it monopolizes the sound device, and when something interrupts it, it won't output anymore. All you should have to do it stop and restart the song in foobar. (Provided that the interrupting program is no longer outputting sound.)

Here's the solution...

Your mobo have some kind of onboard soundcard, right?

Go to Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices and set Windows Default Sound Device to the onboard soundcard, remember to enable it thru BIOS first as needed.

Then the Chaintech will be used by only fb2k, or another prog as you set it up, but I have the ability to control when to use, when not... Don't let Bill Gates interupt your relax time biggrin.gif

The only solution is either to disable Windows sounds or use an alternate soundcard for them as suggested. Since KS doesn't go through kMixer you can't mix several sounds from different programs into one stream, hence the interruptions.

Zao's post was a perfectly sound piece of advice.

PS. Please don't cross post.

What is listed in the foobar2000 FAQ isn't quite correct. kMixer will always strip the last couple of bits from a 24 bit output even if no resampling is involved. Whether it is detectable is debatable but it does definitely happen (I've asked a Microsoft rep at one of their events in Sydney and he confirmed that output is not bit identical if software mixing is used).

Actually, kernel streaming should monopolise and block all other programs from acessing the sound card but Via's driver are such a piece of crap that they kill kernel streming instead of other sounds.
