mixing stage, guy using Protools.

getting sort of a hiss from background noise on vocal mic, an Audio Tech 4033. I stood too far from the mic. Its not bad, but I don't like it.

can it be removed w/out sacrificing other aspects of quality?

You can hear it during singing only, as it is erased during no singing. resembles pumping of a compressor, during singing only.

i'm sure there's a little, but not much compression on the vocal at this point.
was recorded through Br-8 only, w/ no compression during recording.

will mastering, limiting, overall compression increase this effect most likely?

this a cd w/ just an acoustic guitar and my voice.

Appreciate all news, good or bad.

You might want to post a sample of what you are talking about to see if we have any ideas of what can be done to "save" the track.

Anybody know where I go to download a clip?

Compression will make it worse. If it's the ambience you're talking about, it is not removeable. If it's hiss that is constant, there are programs that will sample the hiss during noise-only portions of the audio and can remove it intelligently throughout the whole track. You will never recover the 'presence' of being close to the mic, however. I say retrack it.

Why don't you try something like Audition's Noise Removal feature (get the Noise profile from one of the sections without singing)?

I'll ask the guy. thanks.

The best would be if you can get the vocal track before it was mixed with the guitar, the negative effects of noise reduction will be less serious then.
