I'm tired of my firends telling me EAC is too complicated, but they still want to use Lame (for 192kbps CBR stereo encodes ), i tried to help, but there's like a million free-fast-easy-quick-simpleRip progs out there, and finding a competent one is not an easy task, i would like to find one that can use an external encoder, be it an .exe or dll, has some kind of CDDB support, and rips decently, i dont think my friends need awesome error detection, i mean, these people are awed by blazing-fast ripping, and i dont want to argue, but a good extraction engine would be nice.

Also a lot of these progs come with adwares and useless links and stuff, so i would like to avoid that, does anybody have a suggestion?

I already suggested they use WMP or iTunes, but they are blindly anti-MS and anti-Apple, actual quote: "iTunes is for stuck-up people who think they're better than us because they listen to U2 and say they get the music, and MS are stuck-up people who think they're better than us."

I ask this because, my firends and me have a little music trading thing going and i dont find it fair that they get my EAC ripped, Lame 3.90.3 APS encoded and perfectly tagged songs and i get their 128kbps CBR Xing(Old) rips with a horrible tagging mess .

I forgot about good ol' Audiograbber, this one strarts to get a little more comlpex, but i think it's worth it, what do you think?

Well, EAC and CDex is pretty much the list for quality-centric rippers on Windows.

Audiograbber? Wow, that's a blast from the past. DL it and see what mp3 codec it uses, it used to come with xing. Even if it comes with lame you'll probably need to update the dll.

How about Winamp's cd ripping? It's slow unless you pony up money, but the increase to 8x for free this version makes it usable. Somehow I doubt you've convinced them to use foobar, and I don't know that foobar's cd ripping is any more secure than Winamp or iTunes. How about dbPowerAmp? I think that has a bunch of presets set up in advance.

Tell them to install Linux and use Grip? Get better friends?

Audiograbber is pretty decent. Can use external encoders, good tagging support, can be used as line-in recorder. Using it for the past two years with ease. Give it a try, you will like it.

I setup EAC+LAME 3.9711a for my girlfriend. Believe me, she is not a geek.

I showed her how to press the MP3 button to make MP3s.

She's never had any trouble with it.

Those are IMHO the simplest with usable aquality but AFAIK without the MP3 encoder...

No offense intended, but if they have trouble with CDex ( pressing TWO buttons) then maybe they shouldn't be using a computer (?).

I don't see myself going to about 8 houses and setting up EAC, only for them to tell me the next day they mistakenly f'd up the settings profile and dont remember the command line for the encoder.


Up until now, Audiograbber sounds like the best bet.


They don't belive in other codecs and Winamp doesn't do MP3. Foobar would probably make them want to shoot themselves and/or me. Getting better friends is starting to sound like a good option .

How do you even have trouble with recent versions of EAC? It pops up a wizard and asks you if you want accuracy or speed, then finds LAME.exe for you. Finally you pop in a CD and hit the MP3 icon. Its iTunes easy . . .

I dont know about you, but my first experience with EAC was not a good one, I was deffinitley overwhelmed.

I'm using Audiograbber as i write this, and it's actually quite good, it can use the Nero ASPI Manager, It can use Lame.exe with command line just like EAC, tagging with Audiograbber is good, altho i havent tried tagging with the Lame.exe, it gives checksums, a complete file naming and directory creating system and it's very "verbose" about everything its doing. Nice!

I'm liking this, now to convince my buddies!

EDIT: I just tried tagging with the Lame.exe, works like a charm too.

A ripper similar to SoundJuicer in Linux for Windows would be ideal in this situation.

get better friends haha I love it . I think I would probably just strictly stick with paranoia if I was on Linux, which I would like to be someday. Yeah EAC and CDex are the my top choices for window. How much easier can they actually you make it you have to apply a fair amount of knowledge? CDex even has on the fly encoding to make things fast gee I don't know

It has gotten better, believe me.

The beauty of EAC is, IMHO, that it can be very simple or very advanced, depending on taste. It has been mostly it's anal users that made things complicated, with things like offset calculation and gap retrieval. But to most people this is not important, and EAC has ways to allow you to let it know you don't care.

My sister is an average computer user (word processing, internet, instant messages) and she can use EAC easily. She of course has never lifted the hood (as most of us couldn't figure out a car's insides, but still use them). I did it for her. But EAC's setup wizard is good enough.

Please note that I said recent versions. Unless the complexities of the 'next' button or the 'high quality verse fast ripping' quagmire "overwhelmed" you, I'm guessing you're refering to ancient versions that actually required you to setup things manually, rather then the recent versions being discussed here.

Try Easy CD-DA Extractor. Its simple as hell (for stupid people actually) and it rips pretty decent. Also some users on this forums said that its error recovery is very good. The only problem is that its shareware, but i guess you can find the crack on some warez site.

Btw, do youself a favor and don't use freerip or winamp... they suck so bad.

Why not just set up EAC for them and maybe set up a couple of profiles that they can load if they want the option of different codecs or settings? Once EAC is configured, it is easy to use as anything out there. Put in a CD, hit the MP3 button and go.

My Chinese girlfriend ripped CDs via EAC on my system.
Once eac is setup, it is fine and easy to use.

I think i can safely say i mastered EAC by now, i've been using if for about a year and a half and i know my way around it very well. Also, i'm using 0.95b3.
