Full Version: Got A Tape Deck

Hi! I'm very happy after making a short test recording from a tape deck I just got after being without one for a long time (my old one broke).

I pulled this old cheap Sony dual cassette dubbing deck out of the trash (I live in a college town, and hundreds of thousands of people moved in or out on September 1st.) The recording drive doesn't work, but the play drive does. I'm going to clean the head but I can't locate my demagnetizer.

I recorded 16 bit 44KHz stereo into the linein of my Audigy card. It really sounds much better than my turntable, but I probably need a new cartridge.

BTW, I'm also trying to buy an AMD Athlon XP (Palomino) 2100+ at eBay. Those auctions are killers, though. I think the price has gone up since the last time I checked.

I'm also making flacs and making mp3's using LAME 1.96 with just --presets normal or whatever it is. I'm using RazorLAME, which lets you use only the options you enter. Maybe I'll add a LAME option to the WAV context menu - it would be much more convenient.

You might want to use a more recent version of LAME.

Anyone know about normal noise reduction filters that might be included in WAV editors? I have been working with a recording of a non-noise reduction cassette. I used a blank space between two songs as a sample for a nr filter - should be just hiss. The result sounds ok to me, but I'm worried that I lost some of the music. Can anyone inform me about this?

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, that's true. If I use a noise reduction filter (from Cooledit for example), I use the lowest setting for which the hiss is no longer annoying, because noise reduction filters generally affect the audio itself also.
