I like ape as a lossless format, but it's lack of hardware support (as it's a codec not really designed for portables) has been more then annoying. Is there anyway to convert it to Apple Losseless without losing my tags? (Does anyone one know if apple losseless is really a bit for bit indentical copy like APE, I know FLAC trashes riff chunks if it has them). Thanks

i'm assuming you'll be using Apple Lossless for an ipod - otherwise there really isn't a reason to do so...
options:
1) convert ape to wav, import wav to itunes/whatever to apple lossless
2) use foobar? (i don't even know if this works with apple lossless ENCODER)
3) use another lossless format with a cli encoder (flac, wavpack)

There is an iTunes frontend that will work with foobar. I don't know if it supports ALAC, but its worth checking.
I believe you can also use dbpoweramp.

I am pretty sure that you can use the itunesencode plugin for foobar for that.
have a look at
this threadalac is supported.
a quote from the readme:
-e EncoderName Lets you specify the encoder iTunes will use.
Choose from "AAC Encoder", "WAV Encoder",
"MP3 Encoder", "AIFF Encoder",
or "Lossless Encoder".
(Default is "AAC Encoder".)

iTunesEncode in combination with foobar's clienc will do what you want. Just use -e "Lossless Encoder" on the command line instead of "AAC Encoder" or what have you.
iTunesEncode is here:

Will it retain tags?

Look at the options for iTunesEncode. You can specify the tags in your foobar config string and it'll add those tags to the new file, using iTunes.
Shorter answer: Yes, it can.

Hello
Once again a quick search of this site has given me most of the answers I need. I often download music from All of MP3, and used to make WAV files, which I then convert using iTunes.
However, to save time (and cost) I thought it would be a good idea to download another lossless format and then convert (All of MP3 doesn't have apple lossless files as a download option)
So I read up a bit and downloaded an album in Monkey Lossless, and now have 12 .ape tracks to convert.
I have tried getting dB poweramp working but can't seem to convert the tabs.
So now, having read this thread, I have downloaded foobar but don't quite understand exactly what process I need to do to convert the files in to Apple lossless.
Please can somebody provide a step by step idiots guide for me.
Thanks very much
Steve

I use dbpoweramp with the itunesencode, works like a champ for any format.
All of mp3 do not tag files (AFAIK).

Thanks for the replies
Since Foobar links to the Freedb, it would be good to use this for tagging. How do I link foobar to itunes encoder?
Or if I do use dB Poweramp, again, how do I get it to use itunes encoder to make the conversions?
Thanks
Steve
