Full Version: looking for Java progrmmers

ok a friend of mine likes mpc quite a bit and is looking for good java programmers to work with him on a p2p file sharing program for mpc files...

basically he wants to make a good cross-platform p2p client either based on the code of an existing java p2p program or by building one from scratch

i think he is leaning towards trying to develop a pcp (packet chain protocol) based system

if anyone is interested please email

he will probably put up a webapage for the project soon.

There are actually some plans for this as a part of the Tools sphoid and I are working on. Not much has been done lately, but things should kick into high gear around the beginning of the year. Generic file sharing/chatting is one of the features/modules being planned... and of course the tools will also be open source and programmed mostly in Java (based around SOAP and XUL) with a native backend for certain things.

Depending on what exactly he is doing and how he plans on implementing it, perhaps there can be some collaboration. However, whatever is implemented in our tools will most likely revolve around highly secure generic file sharing, not particularly geared specifically towards audio trading (though the way everything will be implemented it should be possible to customize it towards this end).

Dunno if that helps any, but maybe we can have a chat or something.

Not meaning to rock the cart, but there are already many file sharing programs out there. What features (with respect to the audio files) would be added to make it neccessary to create another one?

I don't really know about Spase's idea, but the module sphoid and I are looking at will be similar in functionality to something like Paranoia. Think highly secure, generic file sharing and streaming with AES and/or Serpent encryption fully integrated into a suite of tools for manipulating audio files in whatever manner most people would ever want (encoding, decoding, processing, analyzing, streaming, ripping, playing, etc). It's only going to be meant for generic audio file sharing (not geared towards music in general or albums), with the ability to customize towards whatever purpose someone may desire.

I do agree that there are already plenty of file sharing programs out there, and I am not necessarily advocating another one. Whatever we decide to do will be within the context of the tool suite we are already working on. It's a convenience thing really.

well if you want to take a look.... he would like to use pcp (packet chain protocol) more info is here: http://www.pcpnetworks.com/

as far as i can tell, pcp works like this:

one person may send a group of files to someone (or maybe just one file)

lets say this "person 1" is on a t3

"person 2" the one he is sending to is on a t1

well as "person 2" recieves the file, he also sends it as well, but only to people with equal or less bandwidth and only to people who request it...

as you can guess this wouldnt work extremely well with modems and such, but i think it is a good idea...

also you all can read what he posted on the AQuA web board:

Bah! Whatever happened to good old FTP servers... that was the best way to get music instead of this lame ass peer to peer BS. Like Dibrom said maybe your buddy would be interested in some sort of technology trade once things get under way, not sure when we're gonna get around to that module... so many things to do... not enough beer....
