I was hoping someone had an answer for me. I have just purchase an iRiver PMP-140 and was loading some VBR mp3 songs onto it. The player has problems recognizing the format. The length of the song is increased by a couple of minutes and the progress counter moves very quickly. (IE. It counts maybe 3 seconds for every second.) The song also has a quick pop right at the very beginning, but other than the initial pop, the song plays perfectly.

I remember prior to winamp 2.08, it also had a problem recognizing VBR mp3s. The songs would play fine, but the length of the song would be off.

I was wondering if anybody knew what part of the source code was changed in winamp to correct this problem. I am hoping that since iRiver is open source that I would be able to correct the problem. Also if someone knew how to correct the pop at the beginning of the mp3 track, please let me know. I know the mp3 is perfect because it plays perfectly on computer and mp3 cds. It only happens with VBR mp3s.

Thanks,

do the mp3s have a propper vbr-header? xing or fhg?
seems the player can't use the seektable so the time is inaccurate.
the click is because it plays the first frame as a normal frame....

Xing vbr header frames are always silent. The only thing that could cause an VBR-header-frame-unaware player to produce a pop at the beginning is a 2nd frame (1st audio frame) which makes use of the bitreseroivr due to some (improper) mp3-trimming action.

Also, quite a few iRiver MP3 players (including my iFP-895) have problems with VBR and ID3v2 tags, try using ID3v1 tags instead.
