Full Version: LAME 3.98 or 3.97?

I downloaded LAME 3.98 from the LAME website. The attached history file references LAME 3.97 beta. What's up? Is there a 3.97beta or are we now at 3.98 alpha?

Those version numbers are suspicious.

Just to clear this up, once 3.97 went to beta, the then current CVS head became 3.98alpha1. So, at this moment in time, 3.97beta1 and 3.98alpha1 are identical. OK? wink.gif

Hardly THE LAME website, IMHO.
Anyway, under the "Related links", LAME Homepage, it points to http://lame.sourceforge.net/.

Thank-you, John33, for the clarification.

My favourite source for LAME binaries is http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html

This site lists only the alpha version. Where can I get a zip version of Lame 3.97 beta?

No alpha version is listed there right now. I suspect you have a proxy/cache problem and you're offered an outdated version of that page.

Thanks. The REFRESH option cleared that problem.

Is LAME 3.97 beta considered a stable version?

Technically, I think, no beta version of whatever can be considered "stable", but yes, 3.97b1 is a doggone good version and everybody expect do be released as final quite soon.

Does this mean I should wait for the "Final" release? Could there possibly be a 3.97b2 or higher?

I'm not a LAME developer and my crystal ball is quite dusted, lately, but I don't think there will be a b2. And I'm pretty sure you're on the safe side by using it right now. Of course you'd probably like to update to the final as soon as it will be available.

Works are already in progress to make 3.97 the HA officially recommended LAME version. You can have look at this work in progress here.

Cheers

It might be an idea to wait just a bit, seeing as 3.90 became 3.90.3, and 3.96 became 3.96.1.

Who knows, maybe 3.97.2 might be the recommended version in a few months time...

crying.gif Oh Noooooo! What if it goes to 3.97.9 ?!

Oh well. I'm ready to rip, encode and burn.....the latest version (and all of the others) sound good to me...time to get busy! biggrin.gif

As you appear set to encode at CBR 320 then I doubt it matters much.

Tried compiling the lame-3.97b.tar.gz tarball on a fedora core 4 Linux box and got the following error:

config.status: creating ACM/Makefile
config.status: error: cannot find input file: ACM/Makefile.in

Had to do a "cp -a acm/* ACM/" in the source directory to get things working. Anyone else notice this problem?
robert
this configure problem is known and will be resolved with 3.97beta2

Though since you're on Linux, you don't need an ACM filter anyways.

Would an ACM compiled on Linux even work in Windows?

LAME 3.98 alpha 2 2005-09-21

Seems to be a new alpha 2 at http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html

Did a search and found this on the Doom9 forums:

It comes from the CVS...Once 3.97 went beta, then current CVS head became 3.98 alpha. Today, it's 3.98 alpha 2 I assume... And there are no big changes between these versions.

What about EAC?

It has been recommended forever, it is rock-solid and it's beta (and a few months ago it was, gasp, PREBETA!!!)
Supacon
Blech... the rarewares link to 3.98a2 seems dead. Is the latest from http://lame.bakerweb.biz/ fine, or is there a chance that you'll end up with a half-deconstructed mid-debugging version of lame with one of their automated tri-weekly compiles?

It might be possible to cross-compile it. But definitely not worth the hassle.
