What is RIFF (I've read the Wiki.) and how does it differ from a container format such as OGG or matroska? Is RIFF the theory and OGG the implementation? Is RIFF the proposed standard? What's going on?

I guess I used the wrong terms. Replace "n00b" with "layman". Reading the specs in the link provided resulted in a resounding "um...". Again I ask: Is it a specification for a container format? Is it a specification for the tagging within container formats? I'm at a complete loss; one-syllable words might work for me, though. smile.gif

RIFF provides the "buiding blocks" with which you can create a container format. The most well known RIFF based containers are WAV and AVI.

Matroska is based on EBML, not RIFF.
