lately, i've been having an unusual problem with my computer. when i have a usb device attached (my external hd or my thumb drive), sometimes apparently, the connection will get interrupted, and then revert to usb 1. its really aggravating, particularly when i am ripping a cd, as i get something like a write failure, and the rip fails... i'm planning on doing alot of encoding to my external hdd soon, and i don't want write errors and i don't want to have to deal with the painfully slow speeds of usb 1.
the first thing i thought of was that it was probably a driver issue, so i have uninstalled and reinstalled my usb drivers a couple times, and it doesn't help. i'm running xp pro on my beloved ibm laptop, and i have been getting my drivers w/ the default windows update driver method. i was wondering if maybe you guys knew of a different place i could get my drivers, or possibly something else that might be causing the problem. thanks!
update: it just happened again while i was encoding a cd image. this is the exact error message i got. "Windows - Delayed Write Failed Windows was unable to save all the data for the file ....wv. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere." it then reverted to usb 1.1, and it wont have the problem again, but it will be running at that incredibly slow rate... its so frustrating.
Try using other USB port. This one may not be giving sufficient amount of current to the device - or maybe the controller and the device don't like each other.
My friend's iPod works only with two out of six USB ports I have. Connected to others, it allows to copy data from itself, but writing any data to it is virtually impossible.

You seem to have a ThinkPad as your avatar... my T41 started doing the same thing last Dec. or so on both USB ports, but I still haven't sent it in for warranty service yet since I use it pretty much daily. I just use my desktop's USB ports for external HDs instead for the moment.

arg. i will have to get that checked out, becasue this is my ony computer (its a T41, as well). i will be using my external hdd for large tasks regularliy, and i dont want to have to deal with the slow speeds, or the inturrupted connections. still, if anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know, because it is going to be very inconvienent for me to get this looked at; i need my laptop for classes every day and i work all weekend. oh well, you gotta do what you gotta do. thanks chun-yu.
