I've really come to like the smart playlists and song ratings of itunes. However, itunes is a bit of a hog and I ocasionaly experience skips etc durring playback. Foobar is totaly reliable in playback and is nice and lightwieght, but I really don't want to go without song ratings and smart playlists.

So, is it possible for me to somehow get a similar rating and playlist system in foobar?

There is a ratings plugin for .8.3. I believe it will allow you to do what you want using the album list and album list pannel componets, but I haven't tried it. I do know smart playlists are supported on the ipod via foo_pod.

You can use foobar2000's built-in album list feature for ratings.

You can assign ratings to songs via say, a "RATING" tag. Then, with the proper title formatting, will sort your songs based on ratings.

Here's what I use:

$if(%rating%,%rating%)|$if(%album%,%album%)|$if(%album%,%title%)

For smart playlists, you can look into the Extended Playlist Generator:

Hope this helps!

Something equivalent (but more flexible) to iTunes Smart-Playlists is in the works for the next stable foobar version.

I found the best replacement for smart playlists to be Playlist Tree. Here's a screenshot of my setup (playlist tree is on the left under the album art and spectrum analyzer). The config file can be downloaded there, too. Playlist tree does much more than iTunes's smartlists, but is difficult to learn. My config file is setup to work as much like iTunes as I could make it. By default it's quite different.

With the Quick Tag plugin, you can quickly set ratings (hit 3 to tag currently-playing song with 3 stars), among other things. You can't just click on a star like in iTunes; it has to be done with the keyboard or by right-clicking and going through a menu.
