I seriously doubt it, but I'd be curious to know if Apple changed the AAC encoder (and/or the new VBR function) in the new iTunes 6.

I doubt it since it's only been 6 weeks since 7.0.2. I wonder how one would test it though, as it doesn't seem to encode the same stuff bit identical even if the same settings are used.

According to Apple there aren't any QuickTime improvements to the mpeg-4 AAC encoder. Apple rarely releases this type of information when they improve the mpeg-4 AAC encoder anyways. I doubt there are any improvements though since iTunes 5 and QuickTime 7.0.2 were released not too long ago.
I was just wondering if they might have widen the variance in bit rate you get when selecting VBR. I didn't think so either, but I thought it was worth asking. I see that iPod Lounge says the fact they named it 6 instead of 5.1 is misleading as little has really changed.

My import speeds dropped from 18-20x with iTunes 5 down to 10-12x in iTunes 6.

Maybe they reworked the extraction engine?

Do you normally use error correction? Maybe they made it more sophisticated.

Right, cause we all know from using EAC, that slower is better ...

No, I don't use error correction.
