I am new here and need help using --alt-preset standard, I have previously been using --remix but given what I have read would like to try switching. I am using EAC and when I type --alt-preset standard into the command line setting on the compression options, the encoding still occurs at what ever bit rate is set in the bit rate setting. The parameter passing scheme is set to Lame mp3 encoder.

What am I doing wrong (besides most things in my life at this moment in time)?

Thanks for you help

OK, i don't know much about how it is with EAC because i don't use it. But i just don't know why so many insist on using EAC to encode their LAME MP3's. What i'd do is just rip the tracks to WAV files, then convert them to MP3's, which is the best, safest way. And instead of using EAC or anything for it i'd use Speek's ALL2LAME. I don't think anything can be more comfortable than this.

Check this this thread or this one.

Good luck

Your doing it exactly the same way EAC does (w/ external encoder), except your batch ripping in one operation and batch encoding in another. As you know, EAC encodes after each individual rip. Safer your way? ....maybe. Easier the mentioned EAC way?....definitely (only 1 user operation). Tagging handled better, too.

Merlin: Here's the string I use in EAC
--alt-preset standard --id3v2-only --pad-id3v2 --tt "%t" --ta "%a" --tl "%g" --ty %y --tc "EAC: Lame 3.92 @ alt pre std" --tn %n --tg "%m" %s %d

Make sure to uncheck Add ID3 tag

Yes i guess. But there are disadvantages to every method. Wanna encode the same album using 2 different settings (like one standard, one extreme), can't do it with EAC, better keep all the WAV's and use ALL2LAME. Wanna encode each track with a different setting, works with both, for me it'll be easier and faster with ALL2LAME. You're nuts and wanna encode the album to MPC, OGG, and MP3, better keep all the WAV's smile.gif.. The main disadvantage is that you have to open ALL2LAME, choose preset, add the WAV's, and encode, takes about 8 seconds smile.gif. About better tagging, i don't know..

SK,

Yeah, your right on the multiformat thingy, which I do a lot of (ogg's & mp3's).

hmmm...

I've been using EAC to rip to wav, then encoding with LAME using Monkeys audio as a frontend...is the All2Lame frontend much better than using monkeys as a frontend?

I can't add or drop whole directories into all2lame, just files. Nor can I sort the files by clicking on the files header. Is that normal or is there something wrong here?

... it's just that you have more possibilities when it comes to tagging, i think. And of course you can save several different presets for LAME and choose them out of a dropdown list, i think! ... the 'No Gap' feature is another story, read for yourself in the readme of all2lame, if you'd ever need it or not (i don't)!

Sorting doesn't work - but if you batch encoding multiple files what difference does it really make.

To add a whole directory of WAVs (2 ways):
1. Open the folder in Windows Explorer, select all files and drag them onto ALL2LAME.
2. Use the Windows find function and search for *.wav in the directories you wish to add and drag them onto ALL2LAME.

Oh yes, I didn't think of using find that way Andavari!
Sorting indeed isn't that important, would be just a nice-to-have.

Yes, but how comes, that in Speekīs Tag-Frontend the moving of whole directories (as Hans has described) works, while neither in "All2Lame" nor in the "MPC-Batch-Encoder" it doesnīt? -

Speek, could you implement this "moving whole directories (including subīs)-into-the-encoder-window" also works with the mentioned Lame- and MPC-frontends?

That would be a great help, really !!

As for the multiple file formats and settings/parameters, In EAC i took 5 minutes to create profiles for each format and the parameters that i use so that when i want to encode an album in say mpc extreme, i select my profile at the bottom and encode away, or if i want ogg quality 5 then i do the same. Not hard to set up but works great!

Yes, you are talking about the same thing!
Good Luck
