How can I make my files something like 3 megs each with the best quality possible?
Since the length of songs (audio files) are quite different usually you shouldn't talk about a general filesize, you should take a look at the average bitrate.
If
--alt-preset standard gives a too high bitrate for your needs then try
--alt-preset standard -Y. If it's still too high you should try an ABR-preset like
--alt-preset XXX, where XXX stands for the average bitrate you want to achieve.
Please see also this
sticky thread for more information information about 'List of recommended LAME settings', quality/filesize comparisons, etc...
I think there are still issues with LAME 3.93 and the '--alt-preset fast ....' settings, at least they are not 100% tested, so you should consider to use another Lame version, at least not newer than 3.92 and not older than 3.90.2 (Search for a sticky thread like recommended Lame compiles, it gives you links to that versions if you need it).
EDIT: Just in case you're too lazy, i've found that
thread with the recommended LAME compiles
