hi

1. I'm using Free CD to mp3 Convertor tool to rip cd's....anyone got thoughts on this utility. It seems pretty basic but good to me.

2. I've read the Lame Settings thread (very useful !) but am a little confused.

I get my mp3's from Allofmp3 at Lame extreme, which sounds good to me !

If I want to rip at similar vbr setting in this utility, would min / max bitrate of 192 / 256 do the job ?

I don't know how to use the command line switches and I'm not sure if you can do it for this program.

thanks

Most people around here would recommend EAC for ripping CDs. It's easy to use, configurable and rips audio securely (without pops, clicks and the rest) on most drives. EAC is really good, I suggest you give it a try. Another alternative is CDex, which is also good and easy to use.

Both these programs will allow you to specify command line arguments for LAME. People here suggest LAME 3.97 beta (get it from www.rarewares.org). All the switches you need are -V 0 (which is the same as the "extreme" MP3s you have) or -V 2 (which is slightly smaller, but still transparent on most samples).

thanks - that was fast !

I'll give EAC a try.

But out of interest, the cd I ripped today was set at Lame vbr min 192 / max 256 and quality 0.

Do you think this would be pretty similar to Extreme ?

Well its probably VBR, but beyond that its hard to say. What encoder? Do you know what settings your program actually mapped those options to? If not, I'd look into it, or else figure out a way to specify the settings yourself.

thanks

I set the vbr myself (min = 192, max = 256) and quality = 0.

Looking at the resulting mp3's I think this was about right because the bitrate is around 220......this is the Lame Extreme rate given on the Allofmp3 site.

I tried to edit the question title but it wouldn't let me....sorry.

PS Is this why you posted the link ?

This is in no way the same as --preset extreme, it is worse quality (max bitrate 256)and inefficient (min bitrate 192). Just use the recommended --preset extreme, which allows the bitrates to fluctuate between 128 and 320.
