howdy everyone
When converting an mp3 from an excessively high bitrate (cbr 320), to a lower rate (cbr 192), will there be any added audio artifacts, or is this somehow overcome and its just like converting the original file to 192?
I realise obviously 192 is lower quality than 320, but I'm also wondering if working with such a high bitrate file will help the transistion to a lower one. i am listening right now but only on laptop speakers, and so i cant fully gauge how much its changing.
im using the CLI with Lame.
thanks for any ideas.

Converting from 320kbps MP3 will never be as good as converting from lossless.
Whether you find the difference negligable is up to you really.

thanks, and thanks for the link.
edit: thank you very much, that post that i somehow overlooked is pretty much jsut waht i needed to know.
Transcoding from lossy to lossy always results in an additional loss. How significant the loss is depends on the source lossy file - mp3 tends to be a bad source, while WavPack-lossy at about 450kbit is a good source. The perfect source of course is lossless.
Note: check out the MP3-section of the FAQ at the top.
