Full Version: Does the X-Fi support AC3 and DT3 pass though

Can anyone tell me if the Creative X-Fi cards, specifically the Xtreme Music can pass through AC3 and DTS streams direct to the SPDIF digital output to be handled by an external decoder?

I cannot find this information in the creative marketing info.

Thanks,

here.

"Supports SPDIF Out compressed ac3 signal or PCM for Stereo Digital Speaker. Also supports SPDIF In with Creative Digital I/O Module (sold separately)."

DTS hould also work because there isn't much difference.

Excellent thanks! I'd missed that somehow and I'd read something somewhere which suggested it might not support it. I'm just deliberating on whether to buy one now. I have been generally happy with my nforce 2 audio but it has a few bugs which are starting to annoy me.

Try some retailer which allows you to return it if you don't like it.

In this X-Fi Elite Pro review, they list DTS under "what we miss": http://www.nordichardware.com/Articles/?pa...6&skrivelse=441

That has nothing to do with the question asked.

That is talking about encoding sounds rendered on the card into Dolby Digital (DD) or DTS. What I am talking about is taking an existing DD and DTS signal from DVD or video files and passing it to the output unchanged. It sounds like they do support that. (Most cards with digital output do support it AFAIK.)

As it happens I am not very interested in Dolby Digital encoding, I have it on my Nforce 2 and it is not very good. I find the encoding delay (that nvidia say is insignificant) a real problem. Playing games, where sound is generated as a direct response to your input, it becomes very noticable for me.

As I understand it DD encoding will always have this lag because it is inherant in the encoded signal. Apparently this limitation does not not occur with DTS making it a much more workable solution but not many sound cards can do it.

I'm not too bothered about missing out on that since other than for films and stereo music I tend to listed on headphones rather than speakers.

I'm also keen to try the 96kHz/24bit digital output with my custom built integrated DAC amd headphone amplifier, so I've decided to order the x-fi.
