im looking to buy an amplifier and speakers to get the most out of my music on my computer

i have an audigy 2 ZS soundcard, and all my music is encoded in flac

i currently am playing all the sound from my computer through my old aiwa mini system that has a 2x40watt 3 way speakers. i would like to achieve more sharper trebble, really firm bass and defined mid ranges biggrin.gif

im looking for bookshelf speakers but im not bothered if there reasonably big... eg 35 wide and 60 tall.

i was wondering what advice youd give regaurding

a) should i get an active subwoofer, will this take load of my speakers?
b) what amplifier
c) what speakers
Lyx
What people will need to know:

Roomsize?

Any restrictions on how they shall be mounted?

Do you want "hifi-sound" or a "flat"(uncolored) frequency response? Your description implies that you want the former.

the room is not that large, 3.6m X 2.7m at the moment i put my speakers to the left and th right of my computer screen, on the desk, the desk is almost against the wall, i could use stands but this is not particularly apropriate.

but i would like to be able to use the speakers succesfully in a room thats about 4m x 4m, where i have the speakers on a shelf in the middle of 1 of the walls

and id like a sound that is good for listening to music
