Hello,

I'm a newbie trying to learn more about Fb2k. Recently I ripped my 300 CD collection to Flac using EAC.

At this point I want to use and learn Fb2k.

My biggest fear is that I could easily erase part of my flac collection if I am not careful. Being that I have very limited knowledge of this powerfull program, I fear that I could easily make this mistake.

Is this a ligitimate concern??

Yes...I do have a backup on another HD but I'd rather not have to use it!

Many thanks for any advice........Joe

Well, as far as i'm aware, there's no way to delete music from within Foobar...

You could allways make a backup. Hard drives are cheap - i'm thinking about buying a second one to back up my external drive. laugh.gif

Well, there's foo_massdelete....

but honestly, I would be more concerned about messing up tags or something like that. Accidentally deleting files isn't going to be a worry.

I second gfngfgf. Messing up tags will be more of a worry than deleting files. Other things you should really watch out for are renaming and moving files you don't necessarily want moved. I acidentally renamed and moved about 150 songs while trying to copy songs for an mp3 cd cause I used the wrong script. You probably won't have that problem, as you're using flac files. Good luck with using fb2k, search the forums well, and ask questions when you don't understand something and you'll be fine.

Many thanks all for your replies. I look forward to using fb2k!....Joe

Please stop spreading FUD. Also I'm sure you meant losing. Anyway, configuration loss is not an inevitable part of using foobar2000.

In 0.8.3, it depends heavily on which components you use. All the components from the standard installer are safe, and most from the special installer. I don't think I was just lucky, but the only time I lost a configuration was with the installation I used for debugging my own components.

Most of the troublesome components are not yet available for 0.9, because there is no public SDK. Moreover 0.9 has been hardened against configuration loss; I have found it to be quite impossible to lose your configuration without destroying it manually. Note that the configuration from 0.8.3 and 0.9 is incompatible, and there may be minor incompatibilities between different beta versions.

agreed, and yes I meant losing (english is not my first language). I didn't want to imply here the fb2k crashes on a regular base, as also once in a while is a very flexible definition. Actually as you say, the 0.83 is very stable.
However using new components did crash it for me including config loss, and I would have wished to save my config before.
So my advice would be to save configs, sorry for the sloppy formulation. cool.gif

i know what you mean Tom, i have lost my foobar configuration several times before. although, for a new user, i don't really think it's something to be scared about. when i did lose my config, i think it happened because foobar was in the process of closing down (it has already disappeared from the taskbar and system tray, but its process is still alive in the task manager). if ever anything happened to foobar during this time (computer crash, manual close of foobar from task manager, crash of foobar itself) i lost my config. i guess it is because the config file is getting written, but gets corrupted and is lost. but i dunno; also, i think i have lost my database in situations similar to that. other than stuff like this, which i have only heard happening to me anyways, i can't convince enough pplz to start using foobar! and i just started using foo_pod (i think that's what it was called) so i could steal itunes users away =p

well, good luck with foobar!
