Full Version: Hide externally stored files from database?

Hey,

i hope this is not something commonly asked but i didnt find any solutions here...
Because the internal HD of my notebook is constantly full, i stored most of my 75gb of music on an external firewire drive. I only have a small selection of music on the internal drive. The foobar database contains ALL the music i have and there are several problems with that:

first of all, when there is a duplicate album on the internal and the external drive, adding a song to the playlist adds two songs, one offline (external) and one online (internal HD).

the other problem is, that i have to remember which music i have on the internal disk and which i have on the external because i didnt find a way to mark the different sources to remember where it is stored. even in directory view i cannot see on which disk the files are stored.

is there already an existing solution to this problem or is it rather a suggestion for future versions ? also it would be nice if foobar database supported other external sources like DVD's or CD's... it would be nice if there was a convenient way to filter out external media sources or at least mark offline files without recreating the database completely...

bye,

why not make a playlist for the internally stored files and another one for the externally stored files.

Well,

i dont know if i didnt get foobars concept of playlists. usually i use playlists as the name suggests, to order music that i want to listen to in that specific order. I dont know if it makes sense to have a 75gb mp3 playlist ? i thought that the database is the approach to search & organize the huge amount of data and then select playlists from the music IN the database?

if you want the external files be hiden, you can restrict the directories in preferences-database...
or to sort them by directories, go to preferences-database explorer panel and add "%_directoryname%" criteria.

Hey,

although i can select a "Directory View" from the album list Window views, the "directory" view is not configured in preferences-> Album List -> Views
Also i am not sure which setting you are referring to preferences-database explorer, i have database settings, but the views are not configured there...

As for the other solution: Like i said before, if i restrict the database to the local only directorys i have to recreate the database everytime i am working WITH the external disc and this takes quite a while... Adding the directoryname criteria sounds logical to me but i dont know where exactly to add it... Do i confuse album list view and database or is this the same and if, is there no tree view of the database, means, the database only is used for the database search ?

I tried "directoryname" in the Column UI view and the problem is also, it only shows the last directory of the path, not the drive letter i.e.

Try
CODE
$substr(%_path%,1,1)

That should return the drive letter that the file is on.
