I just installed a X-Fi Xtreme Music card with the accompanying S/W MediaSource. When I try to play a .wav file with the MediaSource Player I get the error message "Unable to recognise the format of this file" even if the .wav file was created by MediaSource, i.e. ripped from a cd by MediaSource to a wav format. I un-installed/installed the card/SW to no avail. Creative WaveStudio gives the error msg "sorry your audio device does not support this format". The odd thing is both MusicMatch and Realplayer played these wav files without issue(I've since uninstalled both apps while troubleshooting this issue). I then installed Windows Media Player and lo and behold wmp could/will not play wav files either although the error msg is spurious(cannot play file) and the microsoft troubleshooting website was useless. I then tried playing the wav files with mplayer2(ver 6) and got an error msg "No combination of filters could be found to render the stream". I'm not sure if this msg is because this is an old version of wmp or if it is pertinant to this problem. All the file associations in MediaSource are ticked. Eac, Plexitools and CoolEditPro can all play these wav files so I'm really stumped. Can anyone shed any light on this and point me in the right direction to resolve this. I presume as some of my audio apps play these files its not the actual hardware(card) thats at fault.

.wav is simply too general, its just a container that you can put in so many formats...
it can be PCM, ADPCM, mp3, wmav2, atrac3..
If WMP can't play that .wav file, it probably means that you must install ACM
Do you know what format is used by mediasource?
EDIT: EAC can play that file?
might it because it is 24-bit or some other high sampling rate that WMP can't handle?
because some software will downsample everything to 16-bit 44.1khz before sending it to your soundcard, I'm pretty sure WMP won't do that, WMP will send the exact thing to your soundcard, if the wav file is a 24-bit 96khz for example, and if your soundcard can only handle 16-bit 48khz, then it will be just plain hiss...

O.K. but in this case for instance wmp will not play windows audio files(winxp baloon, winxp exclamination ect) if I load them into the player. In the same way MediaSource while it will play a wav file from within a program it will not play that file if I load it into the player. For example when you are testing your speakers there is a voice that says "Right Channel - Left Channel", these are wav files. If I run speaker config these files play as they should. However if I load one of these files directly into the player I get the "unable to recognise the format of this file" msg and this follows on to all wav files even the ones created by mediasource itself, ripped to wav format from a cd.
